Peterson Health reports 94 new cases, record hospitalizations in Kerr County

In the ever confusing numbers game that is COVID-19, Peterson Health's own reporting proved to be a challenge on Monday when it misstated the number of positive cases. One number showed just 17 new cases from Dec. 23 through Monday, while another reported 94 — which is more in line with recent trends.

Regardless, Peterson Health experienced a myriad of issues — as did Texas — on Monday when it comes to containing the virus that has killed more than 23,000 people. By the end of Monday, there were 31 people hospitalized with COVID-19 —down from an earlier count of 32. Across Texas, the number of people hospitalized hit a record with 11,351 people admitted with COVID-19.

In the Texas Department of State Health Services Trauma Region P, which includes San Antonio and Kerrville, more than 1,100 people were hospitalized with the virus. There were less than 100 intensive care unit beds available in the region.

During a meeting of the Kerr County Commissioners Court, Judge Rob Kelly said that bars would have to close immediately and restaurants would have to reduce seating capacity to 50% by Wednesday. All of those actions were taken after the state told Kelly that the county was outside of keeping the number of hospitalized with COVID-19 below 15%.

With Peterson's recent numbers, Peterson Regional Medical Center was operating at more than 20% of patients with COVID-19 in the 124-bed hospital. Making his first appearance in front of the Kerr County Commissioners, Peterson President and CEO Cory Edmondson dispelled myths about how the hospital was dealing with the virus and that Peterson was still well-positioned to handle a continued surge of new cases.

Also on Monday, the Texas Health and Human Services reported that Villagio of Kerrville, an assisted living center on Alpine Drive, had its second death in the month and a surge of cases — from at least two weeks ago.

That death drives the estimated toll on Kerr County to 60 people. Those numbers are made up from a variety of sources outside of Kerr County and Peterson Health, which have reported 33 deaths. There are currently more than 400 active cases in the county and more than 2,000 people have contracted the virus at some point this year.
