For the first time in 20 years, Kerr County has a new Sheriff.

On Friday morning, the first day of the new year, Larry Leitha assumed control of the Kerr County Sheriff's Office as the county's new sheriff.

During a swearing-in ceremony at the Happy State Bank Expo Center, Leitha, along with his deputies, was sworn in to serve the county. It was one of several swearing-in ceremonies for Kerr County elected officials, including two commissioners, held on Friday morning.

For Leitha, the moment was the culmination of a two-year, if not a career, goal of succeeding retiring Kerr County Sheriff W.R. "Rusty" Hierholzer. Since securing the office through a hard-fought primary, a run-off and the Nov. 3 general election, Leitha has been meeting with Hierholzer regularly and has been a regular at the Kerr County Commissioners Court meetings.

"I'm going to go into the office for a little bit after this," said Leitha after he was sworn-in by 198th District Court Judge Rex Emmerson. "I'm going to meet with my administrators, but today's a holiday and we're not going to be there long."

Leitha said he believes Hierholzer has left him a well-run and efficient department that has navigated the challenges of coronavirus. Kerr County is one of the few sheriff departments in the state of Texas that has been able to keep the virus out of the jail.

After Leitha was sworn-in, he administered the oath of office to nearly 100 deputies who were assembled at the expo hall.

Also sworn in on Friday was: Pct. 1 Commissioner Harley Belew; Pct. 3 Commissioner Jonathan Letz; Pct. 1 Constable Tommy Rodriguez; Pct. 2 Constable Kyle Schneider; Pct. 4 Constable Brad Rider; County Clerk Jackie Dowdy; County Tax Assessor/Collector Bob Reeves; 216th District Attorney Lucy Wilke; County Attorney Heather Stebbins.
