2nd death at Kerrville State Hospital; data shows the beginning of an outbreak at Kerrville nursing home

A second patient at the Kerrville State Hospital has died from COVID-19, while the situation at Kerrville' Brookdale Guadalupe River Plaza nursing home came into focus with time-delayed data released by Texas Health and Human Services.

While Peterson Health is not reporting new data on Thursday — due to the New Year's holiday — the state released information that showed a death at the Kerrville State Hospital on Tuesday. That marks the 24th death in Kerr County this month and the 64th death during the coronavirus pandemic.

On Wednesday, social media posts began to emerge of an outbreak at Brookdale Guadalupe — a nursing home and assisted living facility. Texas Health and Human Services will not confirm current outbreaks, data released on Thursday showed that three employees tested positive for the virus on Dec. 17. In previous outbreaks at Kerrville area nursing homes and assisted living centers, employee outbreaks led to the spread to patients and residents.

During the pandemic, as of Dec. 17, 18 employees at assisted living centers and 157 nursing home employees have tested positive. In turn, that has led to 269 nursing home patients being infected and 17 deaths. At assisted living centers, 32 residents have tested positive, including 23 at Villagio, where three residents have died.

At the Kerrville State Hospital, which is undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation and expansion, 24 patients have tested positive, while 20 employees were currently out with COVID-19.

Across the state of Texas on the last day of 2020, the virus continues to surge with more than 14,000 new cases. In five days this week, Texas has had nearly 80,000 people test positive for the virus, including 27,000 on Tuesday. The Texas Department of State Health Services said there were 346 deaths reported on Thursday.

The hospital situation also continued to worsen across the state with more than 12,000 people admitted to the hospital. In the San Antonio region, which includes Kerr County, 24% of the patients admitted to hospitals in the area were positive for COVID-19. There were 72 intensive care unit beds available across the region.
